Goldstar is committed to Lead Free Paint

RecognitionGoldstar Paints Recognised for Leadership in Lead-Free Decorative Paint

Goldstar Paints has received a letter of congratulations from the Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP), recognising the company’s early leadership and public commitment to lead-free decorative paint in Tanzania.

The letter acknowledges Goldstar’s decision to reformulate its decorative paint range by 2016 and to communicate its lead-free commitment openly to Tanzanian consumers. It describes Goldstar’s actions as an important example of how quality, performance and responsible manufacturing can move forward together.

Recognition of Goldstar’s Early Action

LEEP is an international nonprofit organisation working to reduce childhood lead poisoning by supporting governments, regulators and paint manufacturers in eliminating lead paint.

In its letter addressed to Goldstar Paints’ Managing Director, LEEP congratulated the company for its public declaration of lead-free status across its decorative paint range.

LEEP also noted that studies conducted in Tanzania over recent years are consistent with Goldstar’s decorative products being lead-free. According to the organisation, Goldstar’s progress demonstrates that high-quality, lead-free decorative paint is both technically achievable and commercially successful in the Tanzanian market.

For Goldstar, this recognition reflects a commitment that began several years ago—not simply a response to recent industry discussions.

Why Lead-Free Decorative Paint Matters

Lead is a toxic metal that can affect several systems in the human body. Young children are particularly vulnerable because lead exposure can affect their developing brains and nervous systems. The World Health Organization states that there is no known level of lead exposure that is without harmful effects. (World Health Organization)Lead compounds have historically been added to some paints to provide colour, improve drying or increase resistance to corrosion. Over time, painted surfaces can deteriorate, creating flakes and dust that may become a source of exposure.Decorative paint is particularly important because it is used in places where people spend much of their daily lives, including:
  • Homes and residential buildings
  • Schools and childcare facilities
  • Hospitals and healthcare environments
  • Offices and commercial buildings
  • Furniture, toys and playground equipment
UNEP states that lead can be present in decorative paint used on the interiors and exteriors of homes, schools, public buildings, toys and playgrounds. Eliminating lead-containing paint therefore helps reduce an avoidable source of exposure, particularly for children. (UNEP – UN Environment Programme)

QualityQuality Without Compromise

Moving towards lead-free paint does not mean compromising on colour, coverage, finish or durability.Non-lead pigments, drying agents and other alternatives are widely available and are already used by manufacturers to produce paint that meets high performance standards. UNEP notes that lead compounds are unnecessary for decorative paint because alternatives capable of meeting the same specifications are available. (UNEP – UN Environment Programme)Goldstar’s journey demonstrates that responsible formulation and strong commercial performance can go hand in hand. The company continues to invest in modern manufacturing technology, quality-control systems, product development and the careful sourcing of raw materials. These efforts are part of Goldstar’s broader responsibility to provide dependable decorative paint solutions for Tanzanian homes, businesses and institutions.

Working Towards Wider Industry Progress

LEEP works with AGENDA for Environment and Responsible Development to support the elimination of lead paint in Tanzania. Its work includes engagement with paint manufacturers, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards and the Government Chemist Laboratory Authority.Goldstar believes that lasting industry progress requires cooperation between manufacturers, regulators, technical organisations, environmental groups and consumers.LEEP has invited Goldstar to explore how the company can act as an industry champion by sharing its experience and encouraging wider progress across the paint sector.Members of the LEEP team are expected to visit Dar es Salaam, providing an opportunity for further discussions with Goldstar’s management and technical teams. The two organisations will also explore possible collaboration around International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, an annual global campaign held in October to raise awareness of lead exposure and encourage further action to eliminate lead paint.
